AUSTRALIA has been the world’s largest provider of cloud services, with Amazon the most successful, according to new research from the IT consultancy TechnoMetrix.

It found that the company’s cloud computing business has grown by $4.3bn since 2011 and will reach $30bn in 2018.

The company is also the biggest provider of storage, accounting for about one-third of cloud computing revenues, according the research.

“The fact that Amazon continues to dominate the cloud services market is a reflection of the growing scale of Amazon and the benefits of its scale,” Mr Smith said.

“While there is still a lot of room for improvement, the cloud industry is poised to continue to deliver the best services.”

Mr Smith said the research showed that the cloud was becoming a valuable asset to companies and businesses, and the industry was set to see growth of around 6 per cent annually.

“It is the industry that is making the most progress and will continue to drive innovation in the years to come,” he said.

Amazon has been in the spotlight for its aggressive pricing on cloud computing, which includes a $99-per-year pricing structure for developers, plus a $5,000 annual service fee for users.

The cloud computing industry has been growing in popularity and there is now more than $US5bn in revenue generated by the business, according a recent report from analytics firm Gartner.

Amazon’s dominance is likely to increase as the market for cloud computing grows.

A recent report by the technology consulting firm IDC found that 40 per cent of the world economy was using cloud computing and the cloud had overtaken internet-based services as the largest source of revenue.
